About the Mount Vernon Ladies' Association

The Mount Vernon Ladies' Association (MVLA) was founded in 1853 by Ann Pamela Cunningham to rescue George Washington's treasured home and farm from decay and oblivion.

The Association is America's oldest national historic preservation organization and has always been in the forefront of restoration. MVLA purchased the estate in 1858 and continues to carry on Miss Cunningham’s mission by lovingly maintaining Mount Vernon and preserving priceless artifacts from the life of the first great American.

MVLA is a nonprofit tax-exempt organization within the meaning of Section 501 ( c) (3) of the Internal Revenue Code. Contributions to MVLA are deductible to the fullest extent provided by law. MVLA’s Federal Identification Number is 54-0564701.
